UJENZI: Uganda

Initiative to End Child Malnutrition (IECM)

The IECM was established as collaboration between the Division of Global Health and Human Rights (GHHR), the
Harvard College Global Hunger Initiative (GHI), and Karoli Lwanga Nyakibale Hospital in Rukungiri District, Uganda.

From the Ground Up

The mission of IECM was to create, within the District of Rukungiri, an affordable and locally sustainable model that utilized community nutrition awareness and education, addressed barriers to appropriate child nutrition, and identified and systematically provided high quality care for children suffering from malnutrition both in the district health centers and at the malnutrition referral center of Nyakibale Hospital.

Through this platform, IECM established a center for severe acute malnutrition and 43 regional screening and outpatient feeding centers before all sites were successfully transitioned to local control and operation.
